Starlink is drawing attention to connectivity issues in business aviation

High-speed internet access is quickly becoming a standard expectation in business aviation, as passengers traveling for business and leisure alike increasingly demand the same uninterrupted connectivity they enjoy on the ground.

This trend is being driven by the rapid advancement of next-generation satellite technology, including SpaceX’s Starlink network. The system delivers high-speed, low-latency broadband connectivity, enabling passengers to participate in video conferences, stream content, and stay connected in real time throughout their flight.

The growing importance of in-flight connectivity reflects a broader shift across the aviation industry: passengers have become accustomed to remaining connected throughout their journey. As commercial airlines continue expanding onboard Wi-Fi services, customer expectations are rising in the business aviation sector as well.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Starlink added 11 new airline customers over the past year, bringing the total number of aircraft covered by its agreements to more than 7,000. The figures underscore the rapid adoption of satellite connectivity across the global aviation industry.

Private jet operators are increasingly positioning advanced connectivity solutions as a key component of their premium service offering, particularly on long-haul international flights, where passengers are more likely to work while traveling. However, the pace of adoption varies across the market. Equipment installation requirements, aircraft certification, and fleet planning all influence how quickly operators can equip their aircraft with the latest connectivity systems.

According to Chapman Freeborn, demand for Starlink and other high-speed satellite connectivity solutions is gradually increasing across the IMEA region (India, the Middle East, and Africa), particularly among business travelers, VIP charter clients, and passengers flying long-haul international routes.

Claudia Kraihanzl, Vice President of Passenger Charters for IMEA at Chapman Freeborn, noted that passengers increasingly view reliable internet access as an essential part of the onboard experience.

“People have become accustomed to being connected at all times. As more commercial airlines introduce onboard connectivity services, customers expect the same level of service when flying privately.”

At present, high-speed internet is still unavailable on many private aircraft, but it is rapidly becoming an expected standard, particularly on long-range flights. Demand remains strongest on long-haul missions, while onboard connectivity is often less critical on shorter regional routes. For business travelers, reliable internet access enables uninterrupted productivity throughout the flight, allowing passengers to participate in virtual meetings, communicate with colleagues, make time-sensitive decisions, and access cloud-based applications without interruption.

As a result, charter operators are increasingly discussing onboard connectivity with clients during the aircraft selection process, alongside traditional considerations such as range, cabin size, aircraft availability, routing, and onboard service.

Although internet connectivity is not yet a decisive factor in every charter booking, its importance continues to grow—particularly on longer journeys, where productivity, communication, and passenger comfort become increasingly important.

“Five years ago, onboard internet was viewed as a premium amenity. Today, it is rapidly becoming a basic expectation. Operators that invest in next-generation connectivity are not only improving the passenger experience but also strengthening their competitive position in an increasingly demanding market,” says Rustam Askerov, CEO of Liberty Charters.

As satellite broadband technology becomes more widely deployed across the aviation industry, industry experts expect high-speed onboard internet to evolve from a premium feature into a standard expectation for private jet passengers.
